چکیده

The unoccupied electronic states of the Si~111!-Au(532) system have been studied, using inverse photoemission. Striking similarities exist between the unoccupied bands of the Si~111!-Au(532) system and the Si~111!-(737) and Si~111!-Au(A33A3)R30° systems. We argue that these similarities suggest that the Si~111!-Au(532) system contains Si adatoms, and that the adatom-induced surface states dominate both the inverse photoemission and photoemission spectra in the vicinity of the Fermi level. If this suggestion is correct, it means that the bands crossing the Fermi level may not be derived from the overlap of Au wave functions. The Au atoms may actually inhibit the formation of a Si adatom-induced band in the direction perpendicular to the Au chains. @S0163-1829~97!04023-X#

Electronic structure of atomic chains on vicinal Si „ 111 ... - Au

Unusual electronic states are found for gold-induced chain and ladder structures on vicinal Si~111! surfaces, such as Si(111)532-Au and Si~557!-Au. As two-dimensional reference the Si(111)A33A3-Au surface is investigated. The highly stepped Si~557!-Au surface is metallic, despite an even electron count. That is explained by two half-filled, nearly degenerate bands. On the Si(111)532-Au surface ...

OFFPRINT New evidence for the influence of step morphology on the formation of Au atomic chains on vicinal Si(111) surfaces

Gold atomic chain structures that grow on singular and vicinal Si(111) surfaces have attracted considerable interest as model systems for exploring quasi–one-dimensional metallic behaviour. The structure of the prototypical Si(111)-5× 2-Au system remains controversial, however. Reflection anisotropy spectroscopy provides new, independent evidence supporting a recently proposed three-Au-chain st...

Effect of substrate miscut on low-temperature homoepitaxial growth on Si(111) mediated by overlayers of Au: Evidence of step flow

Observations of homoepitaxial growth on low-angle miscut ~;0.1°! Si~111! substrates through an overlayer of Au, together with earlier results on highly miscut Si~111! surfaces, indicate that growth in this system occurs by step flow. The growth temperatures were between 375 and 500 °C. In the optimum range of Au coverage ~0.6–1.0 ML!, ion channeling measurements yield at best xmin 55.0%, and cr...

Electronic transport in Si and Au monoatomic chains considering strongly correlation effect, a first principle study

We have investigated structure and electronic properties of Au and Si liner chains using the firstprinciplesplane wave pseudopotential method. The transport properties and conductance of these twoliner chains are studied using Landauer approaches based on density functional theory (DFT). Weobtain density of states and band gap using Kohn-Sham and Wannier functions as well as quantumconductivity...

A new metastable epitaxial silicide: FeSi2/Si(111)

A metastable phase of FeSi 2 that is not present in the bulk phase diagram can be grown epitaxially on Si(111). Scanning tunneling microscope images reveal the surface reconstruction of this phase and allows one to model its crystallographic structure. It crystallizes with a cubic structure, probably a fluorite structure like CoSi 2 and NiSi2, lattice-matched to Si. The (111) surface has a 2 × ...
